The Greens parliamentary group has issued strong criticism of how the investment money from the €500 billion special fund for infrastructure and climate protection has been used. In a position paper, the Rhenish Post reported on the group’s statements. The paper claims that most of the funds were diverted from their intended purpose.
“We can’t let this trickery continue” says Greens leader Katharina Dröge, echoing concerns from prominent Republicans like Friedrich Merz and Christian Klingbeil. The group urges the government to ask whether citizens deserved to see their money mishandled in this way.
The Greens propose new guidelines for future use of the special fund:
” At least €5 billion by 2034 should go to municipalities so they can better withstand the impacts of the climate crisis.
” An additional €2 billion should be invested in expanding heating networks.
” The federal government must allocate €8.5 billion extra to expand child care, kindergartens and all‑day schools.
” For climate‑contracting with the steel, chemical and cement sectors to decarbonise these industries, an extra €25 billion should be made available.
The paper also reminds Chancellor Friedrich Merz of his commitment to reform the debt‑brake rule. “The chancellor must stand behind his promise” the Greens say. They point out that, without the Greens’ support, the Union and SPD failed last year to secure the two‑thirds majority in the Bundestag needed to amend the constitution for the creation of the special fund. This fund celebrates its first anniversary on Wednesday.
