The German Green Party has voiced concerns regarding the draft legislation approved by the Federal Cabinet aimed at accelerating planning and procurement processes within the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces).
Agnieszka Brugger, parliamentary group vice chair for the Greens, stated in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” that the proposal falls short of comprehensively addressing the challenges within the procurement sector. She emphasized the need for improvements encompassing speed, efficiency and meaningful oversight.
Brugger argued that minor adjustments to individual clauses will not suffice, highlighting the necessity of tackling two key areas: increasing production capacity and resolving issues within the supply chain. She suggested that expanding collaborative, pragmatic procurement projects at the European level could significantly enhance order volumes and interoperability, a space she believes requires far greater focus and action.
The Green politician further expressed reservations about the coalition government’s decision to significantly curtail parliamentary oversight rights. She cautioned that the substantial financial resources now available must be deployed swiftly and effectively to improve the Bundeswehr’s capabilities, avoiding a recurrence of past scandals and the need for investigative committees. Brugger affirmed the Green Party’s commitment to closely scrutinizing all expenditures to ensure funds are allocated towards the Armed Forces’ most pressing needs.
