After the foiled drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Irene Mihalic, the parliamentary manager for the Green Party in the Bundestag, is calling for the consolidation of drone defense responsibilities under the Federal Police. Mihalic told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that since the police are already responsible for air security, it makes sense to give them full authority over anti-drone operations. She added that the Federal Police would need better equipment to handle the task, noting the critical importance of managing a single airspace rather than multiple fragmented ones. The incident in Leipzig sharply highlighted existing shortcomings in Germany’s drone defense capabilities and the current chaos regarding jurisdictional responsibilities. As a result, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is now under pressure to implement concrete measures designed to improve national security.
