Misbah Khan, the deputy chairwoman of the Green Party’s federal parliamentary group, has strongly urged Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Karin Prien (CDU), to introduce tangible relief measures for families. Khan stated to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday) that Minister Prien’s newfound insight felt like an attempt to steer the “sinking ship of cutbacks away from disaster, even though she was a major part of the crew involved in sinking it in the first place.”
The Green politician further emphasized that if Minister Prien’s insight does not translate into concrete actions, it will merely be another false hope for families to cling to-hoping to be eventually abandoned by the CDU and SPD governing parties. She stressed that families desperately need practical, noticeable relief, and the federal government has a responsibility to provide it.
This criticism stems from the Minister’s proposal to re-evaluate planned austerity measures concerning parental benefits. Specifically, the debate centered on retaining the current 14-month entitlement period instead of reducing it to twelve months.
