Following the announcement by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) that he intends to immediately clarify the permit requirements for able-bodied men traveling abroad for extended periods, the Green party has demanded further measures from the minister’s department. The Bundestag faction’s defense expert, Sara Nanni, told the “Rheinische Post” that a minister intending to address major policy issues with the public must first ensure that the internal operational aspects of his own ministry are running smoothly. Nanni added that there are currently unprecedented developments in the Middle East with massive implications for core German interests. However, she criticized the situation, noting that the entire German defense policy debate is currently stalled because the ministry has been unable to establish legal clarity on a regulatory ordinance for four months, tying up the discussions related to the military service modernization law. Nanni warned Pistorius that he must be careful not to lose sight of the global situation while focusing on domestic issues.
