Left Party European Member of Parliament Martin Günther has called for a European Union budget that properly recognizes the genuine challenges of the 21st century, takes them seriously, and dares to confront them.
In a guest contribution published in the daily newspaper “nd.DerTag” and the debate platform “Die Zukunft,” Günther stated that Europe needs investments in decarbonization and economic restructuring to make its economy future-proof. He also emphasized the necessity of expanding renewable energy sources to eliminate reliance on expensive fossil fuels, as well as increasing wages and pensions to boost domestic demand and make the continent more resilient to crises.
The MP strongly criticized the austerity demands, particularly those coming from the current German government. He wrote: “Those who are currently advocating fanatical cuts fail to understand one thing: what we are witnessing and feeling is not a crisis of our economy, but a crisis of an economic system that could only survive these past years through wage theft and postponed investments. Merz and his colleagues are not saviors, but the architects of this crisis.”
According to the left-wing politician, neoliberal reforms, the erosion of worker rights, wage dumping, cuts to pension and social expenditures, the abolishment of hard-fought environmental standards, and lowering corporate taxes-all while hundreds of billions were poured into military spending-do not offer solutions; rather, they are part of the problem.
