Bundestag Deputy President Omid Nouripour of the Green Party reacted cautiously to the agreed-upon ceasefire in Iran. Speaking to the Funke media group’s newspapers on Thursday, the Green Party politician, who was born in Tehran, stated that the current outcome is merely a pause, not an indication of stability or any improvement in the situation. He added that the US government has underestimated two factors: the regime’s decades of preparation for this scenario, and the regime’s ideological will, even unto collapse.
Nouripour painted a grim outlook for the Iranian population. He warned that the greatest danger facing the people of Iran might be just beginning: being left alone in a bombed-out country under such a murderous regime.
According to Nouripour, the people currently lack the energy for protests, but he suggested this could change rapidly. He anticipated a massive wave of suppression from the regime, predicting that it would attempt to silence all dissenting voices by accusing them of treason or espionage. He noted that a high rate of executions is already apparent in the ongoing developments.
The Green politician concluded by saying that whether peace is even possible remains deeply uncertain. He emphasized that the regime in Iran views itself as having “won” the conflict so far, simply because it has survived. This perspective, he argued, does not bode well for its willingness to seek peace.
