Green Youth Leader Criticizes Party’s Arrogance, Urges Greater Civic Engagement in East Germany

Before the upcoming state elections in Saxony‑Anhalt and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Henriette Held, the spokesperson for the Green Youth, criticized her own party.

“Especially in the East, the Greens unfortunately suffer from a problem of moral superiority” Held told the news portal Watson. She said that politics in East Germany must be shaped not only for, but also with the people on the ground.

In that context, the 24‑year‑old demanded the organization of concrete local events. “The AfD does that better: they involve themselves locally and even create meeting spots” she said. “I think of many town festivals in MV: they are organized by the AfD and not by the Greens. They offer free sausages, inflatable castles, and music”.

Despite her criticism, Held praised the initiative of Green Party chairman Felix Banaszak to open an additional office in Brandenburg. “It’s a good approach because the Greens – and we as Green Youth – still struggle with visibility on site” she said.

Held has been co‑spokeswoman with Luis Bobga since October 2025.
