A leading figure within Germany’s Green Youth movement is advocating for the nationalization of several major corporations as a necessary step in addressing the climate crisis. Jakob Blasel, co-chair of the Green Youth, stated in an interview with “Der Spiegel” that companies including RWE, Leag and Thyssenkrupp should be brought under public ownership.
Blasel argued that nationalization is required to ensure these corporations alter business models he believes are damaging to both the environment and communities. He expressed a loss of confidence in these companies’ willingness to act in a climate-responsible manner, citing their prioritization of short-term profits and shareholder value. He suggested that state intervention is necessary if such firms fail to make significant changes independently.
Acknowledging that the proposal goes beyond current political discourse, Blasel defended its necessity, emphasizing the urgency of the climate crisis and the inadequacy of existing measures. He asserted that the severity of the situation demands ambitious and potentially disruptive solutions.
Furthermore, Blasel included a proposal for a “status guarantee” for workers currently employed in industries reliant on fossil fuels. He stated that individuals holding stable positions and benefiting from established labor agreements should be offered seamless transition opportunities into alternative, non-fossil-based sectors within companies.
Jakob Blasel has held the position of Federal Spokesperson for Green Youth, alongside Jette Nietzard, since October 2024. The Green Youth serves as the youth wing of the German Green Party.
