Greens Demand Special Bundestag Session

The recent failed election for judges of the Federal Constitutional Court has triggered calls for an emergency session of the Bundestag. Green Party parliamentary group leaders Britta Haßelmann and Katharina Dröge have publicly urged for the session to be convened swiftly.

Their statement emphasized the urgency of the situation, expressing concern that a prolonged period of uncertainty over the government’s stability is unacceptable. They asserted the need to determine whether the governing coalition still commands the necessary majority within the parliament.

The failed election has placed the coalition in a precarious position and the Green parliamentary group is advocating for an extraordinary session to be held next week to immediately address the appointments to the Federal Constitutional Court. This, they argue, demonstrates respect for the three nominated candidates and acknowledges the importance of the court itself.

Acknowledging the selection of three highly qualified individuals by the judicial election committee, the Green leaders affirmed their support for all three nominees. They further indicated that CDU/CSU and SPD parties are expected to secure the necessary democratic majority for their respective nominations. Should this fail to materialize, the statement implied a potential questioning of the suitability of Jens Spahn, parliamentary group leader of the CDU/CSU, to continue in his role.
