The national co-leader of the Green Party, Felix Banaszak, is establishing a constituency office in Brandenburg an der Havel, a location approximately 300 miles from his Duisburg electoral district. This move, detailed in a letter to the local Green Party association and reported by “Tagesspiegel”, aims to bolster the party’s presence in the region following disappointing results in the recent state elections.
In the letter, Banaszak stated his intention to bridge the gap between Berlin-based federal politics and Brandenburg, facilitating a greater exchange of perspectives. The new office is slated to open after the summer recess, with the co-leader intending to be present for several hours during its launch. While he acknowledged that his involvement will be limited due to existing commitments in Duisburg and Berlin, he emphasized his desire to foster stronger ties with the region.
This opening represents a component of a larger Eastern strategy currently being developed by the Green Party. The party experienced significant setbacks in 2023, losing representation in the state governments of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. Further electoral challenges are anticipated in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt next year.
Speaking to “Tagesspiegel”, Banaszak underscored the imperative for the Green Party, traditionally dominated by supporters from western Germany, to cultivate a more comprehensive, nationwide perspective. He stressed the need for increased accessibility and engagement with everyday concerns, a priority particularly relevant in eastern Germany.
