The Green Party has denied reports that it is considering Angela Merkel, the former chancellor, as a candidate for the presidency. Green parliamentary leader Britta Haßelmann told the “Rheinische Post” that Merkel herself has already spoken on the matter and that “there is nothing to it”. She added that at the present time the Green Party has neither discussed nor decided on any presidential candidate.
Merkel also rejected the speculation. A spokesperson from the office of former Chancellor Merkel replied to an “Tagesspiegel” enquiry, describing the idea as “far‑fetched”.
Earlier, the tabloid “Bild” reported that senior CDU figures are worried the Greens might propose Merkel for the presidency. Historically, no former chancellor has ever taken the office of Federal President.
The Federal Convention will decide on a successor for Frank‑Walter Steinmeier in early 2027. The governing Union parties are expected to hold the largest faction in that assembly, and the call for Germany’s first female head of state continues to grow louder.
