Greens Urge German Leader to Increase Pressure on Russia Over Ukraine Attacks

Following recent Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine, members of the Green party have called upon Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to collaborate with European partners in increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Green party co-leader Franziska Brantner stated that hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight, describing it as a familiar pattern of response from Putin following peace initiatives – most recently, discussions held in Alaska and Washington.

Brantner acknowledged Merz’s efforts to demonstrate solidarity, highlighting his recent trip to Moldova alongside President Macron and Prime Minister Tusk, but emphasized the need for concrete action to accompany words and displays of support.

“This is about our peace in Europe – and we cannot base our hopes on the whims of Donald Trump” Brantner stated. “The Chancellor must now do everything in his power, together with our European partners, to increase pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine’s position”.
