A leading Green Party politician in the German state of Hesse, Mathias Wagner, has advocated for increased financial contributions from high-wealth individuals towards climate protection initiatives.
Speaking to public broadcaster hr, Wagner highlighted the significant wealth disparity within the country, stating that a more robust taxation of extreme wealth could help make climate protection measures accessible for all citizens.
The call echoes similar proposals from fellow Green Party national co-leader, Felix Banaszak, who previously suggested a “climate solidarity levy” for individuals with exceptionally high incomes or assets. However, Wagner clarified he prioritizes achieving climate neutrality over specific funding mechanisms. “I’m focused on the goal and open to the path to get there” he stated, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to policy implementation.
Wagner criticized current national and state governments for allegedly reducing funding for climate protection and insufficiently addressing the challenges posed by climate change, asserting that existing policies are inadequate to steer the country towards a sustainable future.
