Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Green party faction, has warned that rising costs for all gas customers are imminent, following an order given to a state-owned company to store gas. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Dröge stated that since the beginning of the Iran war in February, it should have been clear that gas supply would be challenging this winter.
The Green politician further criticized Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Katherina Reiche (CDU), asserting that since then, Reiche has “ignored all warning signs and maneuvered the country deeper into a dead end.” Dröge argued that high prices are now being incurred with purchasing, and ultimately, everyone pays the bill. She claimed that Reiche’s policies perpetuate reliance on expensive foreign gas.
From Dröge’s perspective, it would be better to enable people to transition away from expensive gas, thus avoiding having to worry about gas supply every winter. This discussion followed the federal government’s directive to the state-owned energy company, Sefe, on Tuesday evening to increase natural gas storage.
