According to Green Party budget politician Sebastian Schäfer, the federal government’s planned loan for the statutory long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) this year will be insufficient and will ultimately not be manageable. Schäfer told the “Rheinische Post” that the intended €3.2 billion loan from the federal budget for long-term care insurance is unlikely to be adequate for the current year. The Green politician also criticized the coalition government, stating that it appears to be “getting bogged down” in the care reform. He questioned how the care insurance system could possibly be put in a position to ever repay such a loan, warning that this would lead to another multi-billion euro shadow debt. Estimates suggest that the long-term care insurance system will face a deficit of at least €8 billion in the coming year. Currently, the federal government plans to provide the long-term care fund with a €3.2 billion loan to help counterbalance that deficit.
