Greens Welcome Evelyn Palla’s Appointment

The proposed appointment of Evelyn Palla as the new head of Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) has received positive endorsement from the Green Party. Matthias Gastel, a Green Party transportation expert, described Palla as “a good choice” for the role, highlighting her experience gained from leadership positions within two major rail organizations. This combination, he noted, provides her with both an external perspective and a deep understanding of internal operations.

However, Gastel emphasized that Palla’s success will be contingent on significant improvements to the operational environment for the national rail operator. He stressed the necessity of the federal government to enhance conditions for Deutsche Bahn, beginning with securing robust and predictable long-term funding for infrastructure projects. Improved oversight and management of the company were also identified as essential components for a successful turnaround.

Furthermore, Gastel underscored the need to reduce track access charges, a critical factor in preventing the curtailment of long-distance rail services beyond primary routes due to economic unviability. A more favorable pricing structure, he argued, is vital to ensuring the sustainability of the broader rail network.
