In the mayoral runoff in Munich, Green candidate Dominik Krause defeated incumbent Dieter Reiter of the SPD.
Reiter, after initial vote counts, immediately congratulated his opponent. “I messed up, it was my fault” he said, and announced his withdrawal from politics, declaring, “That was the last day of my political career”.
Reiter has been Munich’s mayor since 2014. During this campaign cycle he had come under scrutiny for a government‑approved position on FC Bayern Munich’s administrative board, primarily due to a contentious high expense allowance. In response to the criticism, he stepped down from all roles at FC Bayern on March 11.
