Hardt Urges Inclusive Syrian Future as Refugees Consider Return in Berlin Talks

The foreign‑policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU Bundestag faction, Jürgen Hardt, says the federal government will insist during its talks with Syrian transitional president Ahmed al‑Schaara that every group in the country be involved in rebuilding.

Hardt explained on RBB‑Inforadio that Syria is a multi‑ethnic nation with no single dominant group. “Only if all these groups are included and their rights preserved can a political future be achieved” he said.

He also stressed that an ultimate aim must be a peaceful relationship between Syria and its neighbours. “With a stabilised, peace‑oriented Syria we would have an important partner for regional security” he added.

During al‑Schaara’s state visit to Berlin, he will meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the talks are expected to cover the return of Syrian refugees from Germany. Hardt noted that the civil war, which previously drove people out, is largely over in many parts of Syria, so the reason to stay in Germany is no longer strong. Syrian refugees should therefore be encouraged to return, ideally with direct financial support to the individuals rather than through government channels, allowing them to rebuild their lives independently.

Hardt clarified that priority should be given to those who are not integrated, lack work, and see no future in Germany. “We have to help them find a route back to Syria if the circumstances align with what we want and with what those people need” he said. He added that some Syrian refugees might remain in Germany if they are needed there.
