Heat Pumps Surge in Popularity in Germany

A recent survey reveals that heat pumps are rapidly emerging as the preferred heating technology for German homeowners. Conducted by market research firm Appinio on behalf of heating system provider Thermondo, the poll of 700 homeowners indicates a significant shift in heating preferences.

Currently, 34% of respondents stated they would opt for a heat pump if replacing their existing heating system today. This marks a considerable lead over gas heating systems, which were preferred by 24% of those surveyed. Hybrid systems garnered 17% of the preference, followed by oil heating at 9%.

Homeowners cited several compelling reasons for choosing a heat pump, including the potential for reduced heating costs, environmental protection benefits, greater energy security and the prospect of increased property value. However, concerns remain, with initial investment costs, the suitability of individual homes and perceived economic viability acting as deterrents for some. A substantial 55% of respondents specifically mentioned that lower electricity prices would be a crucial incentive for transitioning to a heat pump.

Industry associations, the German Heating Industry Association and the German Heat Pump Association, report that the first half of 2025 saw a historic milestone: for the first time, more heat pumps than gas heating systems were sold nationwide. However, overall sales remain subdued. Industry representatives attribute this to current uncertainty within the household sector, stemming from the government’s recent plans to dismantle the previous “heating law” coalition policy. This policy change has created a state of flux and delayed decisions regarding heating system upgrades.
