Facing a surge in temperatures across Germany, the Federal Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) is urging political leaders to develop legally binding heat protection strategies.
President of the German Medical Association, Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, emphasized the urgent need for concrete plans, clearly defined responsibilities and targeted support for vulnerable populations in an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. He identified individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses, the elderly, pregnant women, children and those lacking access to cooling spaces as particularly at risk during heatwaves.
Dr. Reinhardt stressed that while medical professionals are prepared to respond, a comprehensive approach is essential. “Heat protection doesn’t begin solely in doctor’s offices and hospitals” he stated. “It starts in cities, schools, businesses, care facilities – and in every home”. The association is advocating for a multi-faceted strategy involving various sectors to mitigate the health risks associated with rising temperatures.
