Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) has expressed his opposition to preparing for a possible electoral success by the AfD in the upcoming state elections. Instead, he stated to the television broadcaster “Welt” that the time must be utilized to conduct an engaging campaign.
“The full commitment is required, above all, from the CDU and CSU to do everything necessary to ensure that there is no electoral success for the AfD. That would be extremely dangerous for our entire country. We must discuss this,” Herrmann said. He strongly cautioned against engaging in “theoretical discussions” about what might happen if the AfD succeeds, insisting that instead, they must focus on preventing the party from gaining power, as his sentiment is that this would be detrimental to the nation.
He argued that regardless of how the elections turn out, society is capable of reacting appropriately. “It would be entirely the wrong signal if we were now primarily preoccupied with a question like, what if the AfD were successful. As committed democrats, it is our duty to do everything possible to prevent precisely such a party from taking power.”
