Hertha BSC progressed in the first round of the DFB-Pokal following a penalty shootout victory over Preußen Münster. The match, which finished goalless after 120 minutes of play, saw the Berlin-based club demonstrate composure from the spot. Sebastian Gronning, Maurice Krattenmacher, Mickael Cuisance, Leon Jensen and Fabian Reese all successfully converted their penalties for Hertha. Münster’s Babis Makridis struck the crossbar with his attempt, ultimately proving decisive.
The fixture began with a strong start from the hosts, Preußen Münster, who created a number of opportunities in the first half but were repeatedly denied by Hertha goalkeeper Ernst. Marvin Schulz and Etienne Amenyido were particularly threatening, however, they were unable to find the back of the net. Hertha appeared vulnerable defensively and struggled to relieve pressure. The second half and extra time proved more balanced, though neither side could break the deadlock.
The penalty shootout saw Hertha ultimately prevail. Lars Lokotsch and Simon Scherder converted for Münster, but Makridis’ missed penalty sealed their fate in the competition. Hertha BSC now continue their pursuit of a potential final appearance at their home stadium, the Olympiastadion, whilst Preußen Münster will turn their focus to league competition.
