Hoffmann: CSU Expects Approval for Emmenegger as Constitutional Judge

Following a proposal by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) regarding the election of a judge for the Federal Constitutional Court, Alexander Hoffmann, leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group, anticipates support from the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Hoffmann conveyed his optimism to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” on Wednesday, stating he had formed a positive impression of Sigrid Emmenegger.

A key factor in his assessment was Emmenegger’s measured approach to public appearances, a point of consideration for many of his colleagues. He further noted that she does not project an intent to challenge core positions of the Union or to radically overhaul established jurisprudence of the Federal Constitutional Court.

Hoffmann emphasized that the candidacy will be discussed within the Union parliamentary group, expressing confidence that support will be forthcoming. He also anticipates that the other two contenders, Günter Spinner and Ann-Katrin Kaufhold, will remain in consideration. He argued that their existing selection by the Bundestag’s electoral committee necessitates their continued pursuit, citing their high level of acceptance. He highlighted that even during the particularly lively debates this summer, signals from the Green Party suggested a desire to maintain those candidates, a stance he believes should not be reversed.
