Hoppermann Named Head of German Corona Inquiry Committee

Franziska Hoppermann of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has been elected chair of the parliamentary inquiry commission tasked with analyzing the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The commission’s primary objective is to draw lessons applicable to future pandemic events.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Hoppermann emphasized a commitment to a constructive analysis, focusing on political decisions, social consequences and the role of science during the pandemic, rather than assigning blame. She argued that an inquiry commission is a more effective instrument than an investigative committee, as the latter is “too short-sighted and only looks to the past” failing to address societal divisions that arose during the crisis.

The German Association of Cities and Municipalities (DStGB) has welcomed the commission’s initiation. DStGB President Ralph Spiegler told the “Rheinische Post” that the commission’s work is a “good and correct step” allowing for valuable conclusions to be drawn and preparedness for future events to be improved. He noted the significant demands placed on cities and municipalities, which were often responsible for implementing and enforcing measures under intense time pressure, highlighting the strength of Germany’s federal system during the pandemic. Spiegler acknowledged that the commission will likely identify decisions that, in retrospect, were not effective or excessive, but stressed that this shouldn’t undermine the overall prudent and proportionate response of the state.

The Education and Science Union (GEW) also expressed positive views on the commission’s formation. GEW Chairwoman Maike Finnern stated that it is a “correct and important step” adding that the pandemic’s impact continues to be felt, particularly within educational institutions where measures had significant and lasting consequences for children and young people.

The ongoing work of the commission reflects a commitment from the governing coalition to comprehensively address the pandemic and its ramifications. The parliamentary body began its work this week, initiating a broad examination of the events and responses to the crisis.
