Singer Howard Carpendale warns that a career in the music industry is now almost hopeless because of artificial intelligence. “Learn basketball” he says to aspiring artists. “You have a better chance of making a living that way than with music”.
Carpendale’s concerns stem from AI’s growing ability to compose music on its own. He adds that young talent struggles to get noticed amid the fierce competition on streaming services. “Around 80,000 new tracks hit the market worldwide every day” he points out. For musicians trying to establish themselves, he says, the only viable path is hope: “Write your own songs, upload them, and pray. Nothing else works”.
He does not expect to see major success for himself again. “I don’t think I’ll ever have another big hit” he told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. In his view, the industry is broken.
