Hubert Hüppe has been elected as the new federal chairman of the “Senioren-Union” a prominent organization representing the interests of senior citizens within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The election took place at the group’s 20th federal delegates’ meeting in Magdeburg, where Hüppe secured approximately 72% of the vote, defeating interim chairman Helge Benda.
The 68-year-old Hüppe brings a substantial background in social policy and extensive parliamentary experience. He served as a member of the German Bundestag from 1991 to 2009, again from 2012 to 2017 and most recently from 2021 to 2025. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on healthcare, bioethics and the inclusion of people with disabilities. Additionally, he served as the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Matters concerning People with Disabilities from 2009 to 2013.
In his acceptance speech, Hüppe emphasized his commitment to strengthening the Senioren-Union’s position as a significant voice within the CDU. The organization is already considered an influential current within the party and functions as an advocate for the concerns and interests of the older generation. The position of chairman automatically includes a seat on the CDU’s federal executive committee.
