The appellate court has reduced the prison sentence for Maja T., a non-binary German person, from eight to seven years in the ongoing case concerning violent acts against suspected right-extremists in Budapest. The court announced this reduction on Wednesday. T. had originally been convicted in February for life-threatening bodily harm and membership in a criminal association. This case is part of what is referred to as the “Budapest Complex,” covering attacks carried out by left-extremists against suspected right-extremists during the “Day of Honor” ceremonies in Budapest in February 2023. Additional context involves complex extradition proceedings: Hungary issued an European Arrest Warrant against T. in November 2023, and her extradition took place in June 2024. However, the German Federal Constitutional Court subsequently determined that T.’s extradition was unlawful.
