IG Metall Demands Immediate Energy Relief from Government Amid Economic Uncertainty

Before meeting with business associations and labor unions to discuss the economy following the Iran war, IG-Metall Vice President Jürgen Kerner is demanding immediate state relief measures. Speaking on the “Power & Policy” podcast from “Politico” Kerner stated that, in his view, “Klingbeil’s office must secure financing in the short term”. He added, “I believe people expect an immediate reduction in energy costs. This means we either have to increase the commuter allowance or provide an immediate payout”.

Kerner dismissed the idea of relief only being possible through tax returns years later, arguing that “arguing that it will show up eventually in a year on your tax return is not enough for the people”. Furthermore, he stated that businesses also require “immediate relief”.

Kerner is scheduled to attend the meeting on Friday, predicting that the discussion with Klingbeil will be an exploration of positions. According to him, “I think it is also a gauge from him to see what important social groups-and so we see ourselves, the trade unions, and the employers-support, and what their demands are”.
