Include Us in Bundeswehr Procurement

The German state of Saxony is calling for increased consideration of eastern German states in the planned acceleration of Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) procurement processes.

Saxony’s Minister-President, Michael Kretschmer of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has emphasized that a substantial portion of defense acquisitions must be produced within eastern Germany to ensure equitable regional development. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” newspaper, Kretschmer noted that while the new rules for Bundeswehr procurement were overdue and welcome, their implementation requires deliberate planning.

He highlighted the concentration of major German defense industry headquarters in western Germany as a key factor. Kretscher stated that the Federal Ministry of Defense has a responsibility to address this imbalance. A group of eastern German state leaders intends to discuss the matter with the German Chancellor.

The Bundeskabinett (Federal Cabinet) recently approved legislation designed to expedite the planning and procurement stages for the Bundeswehr. The bill is now proceeding to parliamentary review.
