Increased Police Presence at German Train Stations

The German Federal Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has announced plans to increase police visibility at railway stations across the country. The move is intended to bolster public perceptions of safety, addressing both objective security measures and emotional reassurance.

According to statements provided to the “Rheinische Post” Dobrindt emphasized the need for citizens to “feel noticeably safe”. To achieve this, he indicated a two-pronged approach focusing on expanded public surveillance and a significant increase in police presence. Specific plans include targeted police operations – termed “special deployment weekends” – to be implemented later this year with a noticeable increase in officer numbers at key railway hubs.

Addressing concerns regarding potential strain on police resources, particularly in light of ongoing border controls, Dobrindt acknowledged the high demands placed on law enforcement. He expressed gratitude for the dedication of police personnel and highlighted the continued pressure stemming from levels of irregular migration and the resulting burden on local authorities. As a consequence, he confirmed the extension of border controls for a further six months, beyond the original deadline of the end of September.
