Iran Protest Victims Demand Action Against Tehran Regime

Families of victims and survivors of state repression within Iran’s ongoing protest movement have issued a public letter urging the international community to adopt more concrete actions against the Iranian government. The letter, reported by German publication “Welt” coincides with the third anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini, whose passing in police custody on September 16, 2022, sparked widespread demonstrations.

Approximately 100 signatories of the letter are calling for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be formally designated as a terrorist organization internationally. They are also requesting a severing of diplomatic and economic ties with the Iranian regime and the implementation of comprehensive sanctions targeting the IRGC’s financial, military and cyber networks.

The letter further calls for “maximum support” for the Iranian people in their pursuit of a transition to a democratic government. For years, Iranian security forces have reportedly employed forceful tactics against critics of the government. The death of Jina Mahsa Amini has become a potent symbol of a nationwide protest movement that has been met with violence.
