Iran’s Nobel Peace Prize Winner Condemns Rising Violence & Threats

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has accused the Iranian leadership of issuing death threats against her, according to an interview with Der Spiegel. Mohammadi stated that officials from the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence contacted her lawyer directly to deliver these threats, seemingly intended to demonstrate their seriousness and a willingness to operate without restraint.

The accusations come amid a reported escalation in repression against opposition figures following twelve days of conflict between Iran and Israel in June. Mohammadi detailed a surge in arbitrary arrests across the country, alleging individuals are being detained on accusations of espionage without due process. She claims families and legal counsel are often left unaware of detainees’ whereabouts, highlighting a reported intensification of violence, torture and executions.

Mohammadi posited that the current environment reflects a defensive posture by the Iranian regime. She asserts that the Islamic Republic has experienced setbacks in military development, specifically concerning its nuclear program and describes this as a demonstrable fact.
