Iris Berben Criticizes Political Left – What She Said

Veteran German actress Iris Berben has publicly voiced strong criticism of the contemporary political left, arguing it has lost touch with critical socioeconomic issues and increasingly embraces unproductive cultural debates. In an interview with the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, Berben stated that those on the left have neglected crucial concerns such as housing shortages, education, employment, infrastructure and healthcare, instead focusing on areas where public support is dwindling. The 75-year-old actress, who continues to identify as left-leaning, suggested a growing sense of frustration amongst the populace regarding these priorities.

Berben also expressed concern over what she perceives as a tendency toward paternalism and a rejection of enjoyment within left-leaning circles. She argued that simple pleasures – good food, travel, humour and even harmless flirtation – are often subject to moral judgement. She also voiced strong opposition to gender-sensitive language, stating it offends her understanding and appreciation of the German language.

A particularly sharp critique was leveled at antisemitism within the left. Berben described the historical attitude of leftist circles toward Israel and Jewish people as a long-standing source of discomfort, noting a persistent presence of antisemitic views. She expressed alarm at what she sees as a resurgence of these views, characterizing it as a paradoxical and troubling development within the left wing of the political spectrum.
