The arrests, executed on Wednesday, followed warrants issued by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) on November 24th.
The individuals, both Iraqi nationals, are accused of having been members of the Islamic State between 2016 and 2017 within Iraq. One suspect is alleged to have operated within an IS Sharia Committee, raising concerns about potential ideological influence extending beyond direct combat roles. The second suspect is accused of having served as a fighter, highlighting the ongoing challenge of identifying and prosecuting individuals who participated in the group’s violent campaigns.
Simultaneous searches were conducted at the residences of the two suspects, as well as at the homes of three additional individuals currently under investigation, across multiple German cities.
