The Israeli Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, has defended the killing of Al Jazeera employee Anas al-Sharif in a targeted airstrike, accusing both the network and the journalist of incitement since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. “Those who carry out terror against Israel must know that they do not have immunity” Prosor stated Tuesday in an interview with the television channel “Welt”. Israel alleges that the journalist was a leader of a Hamas terrorist cell.
The ambassador promised further investigation into the deaths of the six other individuals killed in the same airstrike, stating, “As is always the case with us, we will investigate the matter”. When questioned about whether civilian casualties are acceptable in such operations, Prosor responded, “The normal answer is, of course, no”. He continued, “But we must not forget – and this is forgotten when the matter is shown so one-sidedly – that civilians were used as human shields in schools, in hospitals, in mosques”. He asserted Israel cannot allow this to continue.
Israel has been in a state of conflict for nearly two years, according to Prosor. “I believe that people outside of Israel do not really understand what is going on in Israeli society. We have learned one thing: we can no longer downplay this ideology”.
