The Israeli Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, has issued a stark warning regarding the rise of left-wing antisemitism within the country, asserting that it poses a greater threat than both right-wing and Islamist forms of prejudice. In an interview with the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, Prosor argued that the insidious nature of left-wing antisemitism – its ability to mask intentions behind a veneer of progressive politics – makes it uniquely dangerous.
While acknowledging Germany’s established mechanisms for combating right-wing extremism and the recognized peril of Islamist antisemitism, which he characterized as a “Trojan horse” attempting to subvert democratic institutions, Prosor emphasized the increasingly blurry line between acceptable opinion and incitement within left-leaning circles. He contends that this line has demonstrably been crossed, creating an environment where criticism of Israel frequently veers into outright demonization and delegitimization.
Prosor pointed to a worrying trend prevalent across European universities and theaters, where a self-proclaimed commitment to intellectualism, moral correctness and political propriety obscures a deeply problematic bias. He expressed concern that the constant and often unspoken targeting of Israel is already having a tangible impact on Jewish communities. The recent incident involving a Jewish conductor being disinvited from a Belgian festival, while scandalous in its own right, exemplifies a broader “shifting of the boundaries of what is permissible” – a normalization of antisemitic sentiment disguised as social justice advocacy.
The Ambassador’s comments inject a critical new dimension into the ongoing debate about antisemitism in Germany, challenging the prevailing narrative and demanding a more rigorous examination of ideological biases within progressive spaces. The assertion that left-wing antisemitism is the most dangerous form presents a significant political challenge, forcing a reevaluation of how Germany confronts and addresses the complex relationship between political activism and the protection of Jewish identity.
