Italy’s Heatwave Melts Ice Cream Sales

Recent extreme heat has led to a decline in ice cream sales in Germany, according to the Verband der italienischen Speiseeishersteller in Deutschland (Uniteis), the association of Italian ice cream manufacturers.

Uniteis spokesperson Annalisa Carnio told the Rheinische Post that consumer preference shifts significantly above 30 degrees Celsius, with people prioritizing hydration over frozen treats. She noted that temperatures around 25-26 degrees Celsius are more favorable for ice cream sales. When temperatures rise considerably, demand for water and soft drinks increases at the expense of ice cream. The association is now hoping for more moderate weather conditions.

Addressing the anticipated increase in the minimum wage next year, Carnio stated that it presents a challenge. Labor costs represent approximately one-third of the expenses for an ice cream parlor, according to Uniteis. Carnio explained that ice cream prices have seen minimal increases this season compared to the previous year, a deliberate effort to maintain affordability.
