J. Winkel Urges CDU to Tighten Pitch in SPD Talks Over Demographic Reforms

During a dispute over social reforms, Junge Union leader Johannes Winkel has urged his party’s leadership to take a more confrontational stance in talks with the SPD.

Speaking to Focus, the CDU MP called for the party to “take off the velvet gloves” and to negotiate hard with the SPD, demanding clear reforms that align with generational justice. “We need to set the course now to address the demographic shift” he said.

Winkel also warned that the SPD must not ignore the looming demographic changes. “It is already clear that in the 2030s the state’s finances will face insurmountable tasks if we do not act decisively today” he added. He cautioned that a shrinking workforce will have to fund increasingly larger pension obligations, and that this situation cannot be managed without reforms.
