Japan PM Defies Calls to Resign After Election Loss

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has affirmed his commitment to remaining in office despite his governing coalition’s defeat in Sunday’s Upper House election.

Addressing reporters in Tokyo on Wednesday, Ishiba emphasized the critical need to avoid a political vacuum at this time. He stated that a swift response to current challenges is paramount, directly refuting recent reports suggesting he had already decided to resign. Ishiba dismissed these reports as “entirely unfounded.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister convened with several of his predecessors at the headquarters of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Tokyo. Discussions were held with former Prime Ministers Taro Aso, Yoshihide Suga and Fumio Kishida, alongside LDP Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama. Ishiba described the atmosphere as marked by a strong sense of crisis, emphasizing a unified agreement among the leaders that the LDP must remain united.
