Japan’s LDP Expected to Secure Parliamentary Majority as First‑Female PM Sanae Takaichi Leads Stronger Surge.

According to early polls from the public broadcaster NHK, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is projected to win a majority in Japan’s House of Representatives. The same result is reported by the Kyodo news agency, based on exit‑poll data from polling stations. It is still unclear whether the LDP’s numbers, combined with those of its coalition partner JIP, will secure a two‑thirds majority.

In the 2024 election the LDP‑Komeito coalition lost its existing majority in the lower house. Following that defeat, and after a poor showing in the upper house, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. Sanae Takaichi then became Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are noticeably higher than those of her predecessor, and she hoped that the early elections would yield a clear majority in Parliament.
