According to early polls, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured a majority in Japan’s House of Representatives. Both NHK, the public‑broadcasting company, and the Kyodo news agency report the same outcome, based on post‑election surveys conducted at polling stations. Whether the LDP’s majority, when joined with its coalition partner JIP, will rise to a two‑thirds supermajority remains uncertain.
In the 2024 general election, the LDP‑Komeito coalition lost its previously held majority in the lower house. After further defeats in the upper house, incumbent Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stepped down in September 2025. He was succeeded by Sanae Takaichi, who has become Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are notably higher than those of her predecessor, and by calling early elections, she aimed to secure a clear parliamentary majority for her administration.
