Japan’s parliamentary election has seen the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) win a majority in the House of Representatives, according to early poll forecasts. NHK’s public‑broadcast surveys – echoed by Kyodo news agency – indicate that the LDP, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, will secure the lower house on its own. It is still unclear whether, combined with their coalition partner JIP, this will rise to a two‑thirds majority. In the previous 2024 election the LDP‑Komeito coalition had already lost its majority in the lower house; after a defeat in the upper house, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. Takaichi succeeded him as the first woman to hold Japan’s premiership, and her approval ratings are noticeably higher than those of her predecessor. With the early elections, she hoped to establish clear majorities in Parliament.
