Labor union IG Metall is advocating for an extension of job protection measures at Thyssenkrupp AG, as a foundational agreement safeguarding employees from widespread layoffs approaches its expiration date at the end of the business year.
According to Jürgen Kerner, Deputy Chair of IG Metall and a member of the Thyssenkrupp supervisory board, the union is actively working to ensure the continuation of the agreement and its associated provisions. Speaking to the “Rheinischen Post”, Kerner emphasized the significant impact of this agreement, noting it currently protects approximately 52,000 employees across Germany.
Kerner cautioned that a failure to reach a central agreement could necessitate localized discussions regarding the future of individual sites and employment levels. He stressed the desire to avoid such a situation, highlighting the complexity and potential disruption localized negotiations could create.
Representatives from Thyssenkrupp’s works councils are scheduled to convene at a company-wide Future Forum on Monday to address these critical issues and explore potential solutions. The forum aims to facilitate dialogue and chart a course forward for the future of the company’s operations and workforce.
