Judge Election Fails Sparks Legal Concerns

The German Bar Association (DAV) has expressed deep concern over the failure to elect three new judges to the Federal Constitutional Court. Ulrich Karpenstein, Vice President of the DAV, told the Tagesspiegel newspaper on Friday that the association regrets the increasing entanglement of the Constitutional Court appointment process within partisan political disputes and current events.

Karpenstein characterized the campaigns targeting prospective judges as “completely unacceptable” particularly highlighting instances where statements deemed scientifically sound were taken out of context. He warned that this practice, if allowed to continue, risks damaging not only the election process itself but also the integrity and reputation of the Federal Constitutional Court as an institution. The German Bar Association represents over 60,000 lawyers.
