A dispute within Germany’s governing coalition concerning the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) nominee for the Federal Constitutional Court, Potsdam-based legal expert Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, has prompted calls for a fresh start in the selection process.
Jan Redmann, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Brandenburg, voiced his perspective in an interview with “Bild” stating that “anger and stubbornness will not advance matters”. He suggested a complete restart of the selection process as a means to de-escalate tensions and facilitate the necessary majority for a successful nomination.
Redmann, who also leads the CDU parliamentary group in Potsdam, Brosius-Gersdorf’s home region, expressed pointed criticism of the leadership of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. He indicated a lack of successful navigation throughout the selection process, explicitly extending the critique to encompass his own party.
Despite the discord, Redmann underscored a shared responsibility to ensure the Federal Constitutional Court remains functional and capable of fulfilling its vital role. The comments reflect ongoing strain within the coalition as they attempt to reach consensus on the crucial judicial appointment.
