Following a display of unity between coalition leaders, the chairman of the Young Socialists, Philipp Türmer, has called on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to exercise greater care regarding the social state and to ensure reliability in parliamentary votes.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Türmer emphasized the need for the CDU leadership to “quickly get a handle on their operations”. He specifically highlighted the need to cease “constant and unfounded attacks” on the fundamental pillars of the German social welfare system.
The coalition’s stability has been strained, Türmer argued, by what he described as “unprofessional behavior” from Jens Spahn, the leader of the CDU parliamentary group, during the recent judicial election. He also cited the federal parliament speaker, Julia Klöckner (CDU), rejecting a rainbow flag as a further source of tension within the governing coalition. Furthermore, Türmer accused Klöckner of minimizing the concerns posed by right-wing populists.
