Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) said she could amend a draft law to provide better protection for emergency and rescue workers, and widen its scope to include train staff.
“In the tragic shooting of a train attendant in Rhineland‑Palatinate, I was shocked” Hubig told the newspapers of the Funke Media Group on Friday. “Many people in Germany feel that this brutal act does not stand alone. We are witnessing that aggression and willingness to use violence in public spaces are increasing overall”.
The proposal, which introduces higher penalties for assaults on emergency personnel, is currently being discussed in a vote. “In this context we will also examine whether there are further adjustments to the draft that would better reflect the particular injustice of attacks against especially vulnerable professional groups, such as train attendants” Hubig added.
