Speculation about future candidates for Germany’s presidency has repeatedly focused on Karin Prien. The CDU’s deputy chairwoman and minister, however, has remained reticent. In the Friday edition of the “Rheinische Post”, Prien said she “fills her office with great passion and still has many tasks to tackle” and added that she always strives to serve her country. A recent headline suggested that within CDU circles there was concern that former chancellor Angela Merkel might run for the presidency, allegedly nominated by the Greens. Merkel and the Greens immediately denied any such nomination.
