Kenya: Students Face Murder Charges After Deadly Boarding School Fire Claims 16 Lives

The prosecution has announced charges of murder against several students following a fatal fire at a girls’ boarding school in Kenya. The students are accused of setting the fire that claimed the lives of several classmates last month.

The tragic incident took place in a dormitory at the school in Gilgil, located roughly 120 kilometers northwest of the capital, Nairobi. In late May, the blaze resulted in the deaths of 16 students, aged between 15 and 18, while dozens of others sustained injuries.

Police have detained eight suspects. Authorities stated that these individuals allegedly started a fire with mattresses located near an exit. Following a thorough examination of the evidence, the General Prosecutor’s Office has approved the charges.

Based on testimonies and the analysis of surveillance videos, the arrested students are considered suspicious and are currently held in pre-trial detention. No specific date for the formal charging process has yet been provided.
